JUDGE'S FRUSTRATION WILL MAKE THE STREETS MORE DANGEROUS

PORAC Leadership Assails Decision to Release up to 10,000 Prisoners

33-3Sacramento, CA – Ron Cottingham, the President of the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), representing more than 64,000 public safety members throughout California, angrily denounced the decision of a three judge panel to release nearly 10,000 inmates by the end of the year.

The panel's 51 page order was deeply critical of California's handling of our state's inmate population and threatened a contempt citation for failing to reduce the number of those incarcerated.

"I am not only proud of Governor Brown for promising to seek an immediate stay of the order, but completely supportive of his efforts," said Cottingham.

PORAC has always supported doing everything possible to create safe and healthy conditions in our state prisons. However, an arbitrary and offensive decision to open the doors for 10,000 prisoners to enter our communities borders on hostile.

"After a lifetime in law enforcement I am not inclined to make dramatic statements or over-react to even the most inane actions of public officials, but this particular action will result in peaceful Californians being subjected to criminal behavior and real dangers," said Cottingham. "Governor Brown and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation submitted a plan for a calculated release of inmates based on California law and it is ludicrous that these three officers of the court desire to obviate the law from their air-conditioned court room and jeopardize the safety of 37 million innocent Californians."

The Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) was incorporated in 1953 as a professional federation of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Today, PORAC represents over 64,000 public safety members and over 910 associations, making it the largest law enforcement organization in California and the largest statewide association in the nation. PORAC's core belief is that working together with other agencies throughout California will allow our public safety members to successfully protect the citizens of our state and ensure a safe and welcoming environment in which our future generations can thrive.
