PRESS RELEASE: OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

33-21On Saturday, November 10, 2012, at approximately 1:59 AM, two Palm Springs Police Department Police Officers were on bicycle patrol within the parking structure at 275 South Indian Canyon Drive, following the local bar closures. The preliminary investigation indicates that the officers began to investigate a disturbance involving subjects in two separate vehicles within the parking structure. The officers dismounted from their bicycles and contacted a male suspect driving one of the vehicles. An altercation ensued between the officers and the male suspect driving the vehicle in the parking structure. An officer-involved shooting involving both officers occurred and the males suspect driving the vehicle was shot.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the location. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the decedent will be released at a later time by the Riverside County Sheriff/Coroner.

An adult male, the lone passenger in the suspect's vehicle, was not injured during the incident. He was taken into custody following the incident and investigators are reviewing his actions before and during the incident.

Investigators are attempting to determine the sequence of events that led up to/and during the incident. PSPD expects to learn more following the investigation at the scene, the autopsy / toxicology results, and from interviews of the involved officers and witnesses. This investigation is ongoing and PSPD will release additional information when it can be made available. The parking structure will remain closed while investigators process the scene for evidence. There are no road closures as a result of this incident.

Both officers sustained (non-gunshot) injuries during the incident. They were treated and released from a local hospital and have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with PSPD policies and procedures.
